Inspired by the structure of naturally occurring High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) endogenous in the human body, Lipodisq® are biodegradable self-assembling nano structures, 10-40nm in size. Composed of naturally sourced phospholipid (Soy, Non-GMO) in the form of a phospholipid bilayer, stabilised by conventional surfactant structures, Lipodisq® technology is able to solubilise hydrophobic/lipophilic and amphiphilic active agents. Encapsulation within Lipodisq® renders the active agent water soluble, enhances agent stability, increases topical penetration and increases the scope of formulation formats available to the formulator.

Lipodisq® encapsulated active agents are available in two formats for use in the personal care industry. Our most versatile Standard Grade solutions are composed of nano structures assembled from Soy Phospholipids (non-GMO) and Polysorbate 20 (RSPO, MBAL). Our Green Grade solutions are Polysorbate free, utilising Sucrose Ester surfactants of natural origin, enhancing Biodegradability and Naturality profile.



The small size of Lipodisq® particles enables them to penetrate the upper layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, while their oily hydrophobic core enables a high loading capacity for oil soluble agents, consequently they have a far greater potential for delivering significant amounts of active agents, as compared to much larger particle systems such as liposomes/niosomes.
In vivo study: Lipodisq® formulation containing a marker dye is applied to the outer layer of the skin for 20 minutes, the skin is washed and adhesive tape used to repeatedly strip layers of stratum corneum, the dye removed on each strip is then analysed spectrophotometrically using a near-infrared technique to assess the presence of the marker dye. Results: Lipodisq® formulation facilitates penetration of the dye to the lower layers of the stratum corneum, effectively overcoming the barrier function of the skin.



Whilst encapsulating hydrophobic or amphoteric active agents within its phospholipid membrane and rendering them water soluble, Lipodisq® constructs also protect the active agent from oxidation and degradation. Lipodisq® formulated actives can exhibit superior stability, in concentrated formats as well as finished products, vs conventional product offerings. Providing both the consumer and product manufacturers with stable and efficacious products for the duration of their use.



Lipodisq® Retinal PE Solution
After >365 days storage at room temperature, 93.80% Retinal content retained within Lipodisq® sample (UV-Vis Spectrophotometer measurement @ λ 380nm) compared to 40.00% Retinal content retained within a conventional formulation format. Particle stability and size characteristics remain unchanged.
